Endocrinologist Ekaterina Young listed symptoms that may indicate iron deficiency anemia.
According to her, a lack of iron in the body is not always indicated by low hemoglobin in blood tests. The doctor noted on the social network that to determine the type of anemia, you need to look not only at iron and ferritin, but also other blood parameters.
Young in her Telegram channel named common signs of anemia. The list of alarm bells included fatigue, decreased performance, drowsiness, deterioration of hair and nails, the appearance of gray hair, pale skin and mucous membranes, sticking in the corners of the lips, peeling skin, cracks in the fingertips, as well as prolonged healing of wounds and cuts.
In some cases, a taste disorder may be a warning sign of iron deficiency anemia. A person has a strange desire to eat toothpaste, chalk, paints and raw meat, the specialist pointed out.
To combat anemia, Young advises reviewing your diet. “Heme iron is considered a priority in the supply of iron and its absorption in the body. It’s called that because it has a heme protein attached to it,” she wrote, clarifying that its bioavailability is up to 40%, while the bioavailability of non-heme iron is from 2 to 20%. It includes products of plant origin: dark green leafy vegetables, pomegranate, beets, apples, beans, mushrooms, sesame seeds, nuts, chia seeds, as well as spices – thyme, turmeric, basil, marjoram, parsley, anise and oregano.
