UN Deputy High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Adedeji Ebo spoke out against the use of cluster munitions in the Ukrainian conflict, the organization’s Department of Global Communications reports. According to Ebo, such weapons should be scrapped, since cluster munitions can be much more dangerous than conventional ones, including for civilians.
At the UN, reports of new shipments of cluster bombs are causing concern, Ebo said. The Organization perceives extremely negatively the very fact of supplies of such types of weapons to any of the parties to the conflict. The international official recalled that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “repeatedly called” to immediately stop using cluster munitions in hostilities.
Ebo recalled that the Ukrainian conflict has been going on for almost 2 years, and all this time the UN has been opposing the use of cluster bombs. He also added that the Ukrainian army still receives weapons and ammunition from its allies. Among the supplies, the official specifically noted battle tanks, air defense missile systems, large-caliber artillery, as well as aircraft, airplanes and helicopters. At the same time, the UN emphasized that such supplies must be carried out exclusively within the framework of international law, in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council (SC) and the Charter of the organization.
Let us recall that the use of cluster bombs in the Ukrainian conflict became known in the summer of 2023. Then the Ukrainian military used such ammunition in the Kupyansk direction against the Russian Armed Forces. Moscow promised a symmetrical military response to Kyiv’s actions.
