The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in his article for the newspaper El País, did not agree with the public and those politicians who advocate an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. According to Borrell, the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the summer of 2023 “did not bring the desired results,” but this does not mean that the EU should “offer reconciliation.”
According to the European official, Brussels should draw conclusions from the current situation in Ukraine and work to improve arms production. In addition, Borrell called on European countries to more actively revive the defense industry, which turned out to be “not even remotely ready” for the crisis between Moscow and Kiev. The EU’s power was designed for peacetime, the official emphasized.
The head of European diplomacy is confident that spending on defense and weapons production needs to be increased in order to contain Russia. Thus, Borrell advocated a significant increase in spending from the EU budget on the production of equipment, weapons and shells.
Let us recall that the Ukrainian leadership expected to carry out a rapid counter-offensive last summer. In June, the Ukrainian Armed Forces began offensive operations against the Russian Armed Forces, which, however, ended unsuccessfully. On January 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the failure of Ukraine’s counteroffensive, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported significant losses of the Ukrainian army.
