Eating ketchup is not harmful to health, as previously thought. Moreover, this product even helps reduce the likelihood of developing hypertension, a team of specialists from the University of Barcelona concluded, the scientific work was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, excerpts are provided by UfaTime.
Scientists conducted an experiment involving 7,056 men and women aged 55 to 80 years. At the same time, 5,821 volunteers had high blood pressure, as well as risks of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vascular dementia and aneurysms. The experiment participants were divided into four groups depending on the consumption of tomatoes, in particular ketchup.
Having collected the results of observation of volunteers, scientists found that those who consumed ketchup constantly and in large quantities had a 36% risk of hypertension than those who did not include this product in their diet or consumed it in small quantities.
Experts believe this conclusion is due to the content of an organic compound called lycopene in tomatoes. It is this substance that lowers blood pressure and prevents the development of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis, scientists say.
At the same time, they warn that hypertensive patients should still consult a doctor before consuming ketchup, like other products.
