Otolaryngologist Svetlana Marnova shared information about possible health problems that may arise when using ordinary nasal drops. She recalled that vasoconstrictor drops and sprays contain ingredients that have many contraindications.
The doctor clarified that drugs for narrowing blood vessels in the nose are not recommended for glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, pheochromocytoma and when taking MAO inhibitors. They are also not recommended after brain surgery, writes ridus.ru.
Vasoconstrictor drugs can cause heart rhythm disturbances and are therefore not recommended for people with arrhythmias. Even in healthy people, overuse of such drugs can cause allergic reactions, headaches, vision problems, or slow heartbeat. They are also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The doctor noted that all vasoconstrictor drugs are addictive. They are not absolutely safe for long-term use; the maximum period of use is five days. They should be used only for severe congestion, without exceeding the recommended number of doses.
For people with serious contraindications to nasal drops, the doctor recommended using saline hypertonic solutions for a runny nose. As for vasoconstrictor drugs, she advised preferring sprays, since with them there is less risk of overdose.
