St. Petersburg will have a second city icebreaker

The authorities of St. Petersburg signed a contract for the construction of the icebreaker Narvskaya Zastava. This was reported by the press service of Smolny with reference to the Committee for Natural Resources.

It is noted that the new specialized vessel will be the second for the city environmental emergency service. Construction work on the icebreaker is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The Committee on Natural Resources explained that during the navigation period the ship may be involved in cleaning up oil spills and extinguishing fires on ships and coastal areas. In winter, icebreakers are used to monitor and prevent ice accumulation and coastal flooding.

It is clarified that the icebreakers used in St. Petersburg have a number of features, including the presence of a lifting and lowering wheelhouse, folding masts and antennas for passage under numerous bridges on the Neva. Also, the vessel must be able to accommodate technological equipment for oil spill response work.

Earlier it was reported that two Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers are planned to be laid down at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg in May 2024 and October 2025.
