Vyacheslav Morozov, a citizen of the Russian Federation, as well as a former professor at the University of Tartu, was detained in Estonia. He is accused of “espionage” for Russia.

So far, the details of the charges have not been disclosed, since the investigation does not want to violate its interests. Morozov, now 51 years old, had his freedom restricted on January 3 for two months.

After bringing charges against the Russian, the University of Tartu terminated its employment relationship with him. However, information about the political scientist is still available on the university website, RTVI writes with reference to the ERR portal.

State Prosecutor Triin Olev said: the investigation believes that the person involved may evade justice or commit further crimes if he remains free.

The head of the Security Police (KaPO), Margot Pallson, is convinced that the Russian Federation’s interest in intelligence activities in Estonia is high. He also noted that this case is a continuation of a number of previous cases and shows the desire of the Russian intelligence services to penetrate many areas of life in Estonia.

Morozov graduated from St. Petersburg State University and the University of Limerick in Ireland. He was an employee of St. Petersburg State University and the Norwegian University Center in St. Petersburg. He started working at the University of Tartu in 2010. The university’s website lists its research interests, including “Russian Foreign Policy and Identity Politics”, “Identities and Ideologies in Russia”, “Russian Economy”, “Russia-EU Relations”, “Critical Security Studies” and others.
