Colonel of the Russian Guard Sergei Volkov was given six years in prison for ineffectively protecting the Crimean Bridge. The decision was made by the Second Western District Military Court, TASS reports.
The former head of the maritime department of the Russian National Guard was found guilty of involvement in the supply of low-quality radar systems to protect the Crimean bridge from drones and the gas pipeline from Krasnodar to Crimea.
Volkov himself did not admit guilt.
The court sentenced him to six years in prison, although the state prosecution asked for seven years. Volkov was not deprived of his awards, nor was he stripped of the rank of colonel.
Sergei Volkov was detained at the end of March 2023 and was charged under the article “exceeding official powers, resulting in grave consequences.” The investigation believes that Volkov purchased Orel-UAV complexes for a total cost of 400 million rubles. to protect the Crimean Bridge and the Kerch Strait, however, the complexes could not withstand Ukrainian drones due to their technical characteristics. According to the Izvestia newspaper, Volkov knew about this that the characteristics of the complexes did not allow them to successfully solve problems of combating aircraft and could not suppress their radio signals. Nevertheless, the colonel adopted this technique “because otherwise he would not have time to absorb budget funds on time, which could have a negative impact on his career.” Volkov himself claims that the complexes were not intended to protect the Crimean Bridge, but to protect the naval departments of the Russian Guard in their places of deployment.
Let us remind you that on July 17, two Ukrainian surface drones attacked the Crimean Bridge near the 145th support from the Krasnodar Territory. As a result, the automobile part of the building was damaged.
