President Daniel Noboa has asked the Ecuadorian people to make economic sacrifices to face the internal armed conflict. Even beyond the analysis, from experts and politicians, on social networks and in conversations in the corridor, there is a high recognition of the actions carried out by the Armed Forces and the National Police, up to the acceptance of contributions like the one proposed by the Government.

“I prefer to pay VAT than to pay for vaccines”; “I’d rather pay a temporary increase in VAT than pay for a vaccine for life”; “Better to pay 15% VAT than to pay a $300 a month vaccine,” are among the comments that illustrate the level of fatigue Ecuadorian society has with crime.

The assemblymen are asking for the costs of the internal armed war and are proposing alternatives to avoid the VAT increase to 15%

The Deputy Minister of Economy, Daniel Falconí, assured that the country needs 1.020 million dollars to face the situation of violence. With the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12% to 15%, the regime is estimated to collect $1.306 million annually.

Citizens, in large numbers, are ready or express themselves as such, but there must be clarity so that the acquired trust is not diluted. The name of the project is Organic law for dealing with internal armed conflicts, social and economic crisis. It is not only because of security issues, although this is what is emphasized in the speeches of the government.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Juan Carlos Vega, explained on January 15 that the funds seek to finance the costs of the internal war, prevent the deepening of Ecuador’s fiscal deficit and obtain economic support from multilateral organizations.

It is a good sign that the issue has been clarified, so that the citizens have full information and do not feel cheated afterwards.

In the meantime, the task of the public forces must be accompanied by fair and transparent judicial processes and legislation, and the Government in accordance with the critical moment, so that the solution is comprehensive, and the trust gained is well reciprocated. (OR)
