The events of the past week are probably the most serious in history. On other occasions, threats to the integrity of society came from forces whose interest was, in some way, to maintain a certain form of civilized coexistence; what they always wanted was to reform the structures, not destroy the building. Every attempted coup or revolution came from groups integrated into the social body, no matter how wrong their proposals. But this is the first time in which those who try to control society are directly anti-social, criminals. As far as I know, no country in America has ever faced a danger of this nature before.

The crime was surprised by the ‘weak’ institutionality in the area of security

Does this unprecedented crime mean that we have “hit rock bottom”? The idea of ”bottoming out” is a psychological trap that makes us believe that there may come a time when we are so bad that we can only improve after that. There is no such thing, there is no logical reason why a series of blunders must be followed by success. The only sure way to end these tragic chains is death. Individuals die biologically and societies disintegrate. This is the case with smaller entities, states, and even nations. This is what happened with Germany, the fall of the Third Reich was not a “rock bottom” from which it magically bounced. It was literally death, dismemberment, total occupation, brutal destruction and the death of about 8 million people between the massacres and the battles. The entity created in the mid-19th century, the German Reich, was not restored. From his ashes arose a republic with very different characteristics. I don’t think anyone wants to get to the “bottom” like World War II and come out of it.

A criminal record requirement for foreigners entering Ecuador via the Peruvian and Colombian borders will go into effect next week.

Coincidentally, a text by the Mexican intellectual Enrique Krauze was published this week in which he analyzes what happened in the creation of the so-called Weimar Republic, from which Nazism would emerge, under the desperate gaze of Max Weber, the father of modern sociology.. In all the dialogues and meetings that this wise man led, he encountered the misunderstanding of young people, who “hated that scientific mind that is not able to offer a simple way to solve problems”. Krauze identifies with Weber’s situation and believes that the German sociologist is also speaking to his Mexico, a country that, like Ecuador, is facing a critical situation, which, thanks to its enormous dimensions, can be better resisted. In the same spirit, those who now believe that they can offer “paths of salvation or recipes for happiness”, that after a few reforms and a little temporary “firm hand”, the causes that led us to the bestial events on the 9th of January will be solved, are not right or blatantly lying. There is no easy way and I don’t see anyone who can impose painful and complex solutions. Because I also don’t see that the Ecuadorian groups are ready to make the necessary concessions, to give up their supposed “rights”, even to start the process that will lead us to permanent solutions.
