RBC: Sokurov told the head of the HRC about the threats to his life after an altercation with the president

Director Alexander Sokurov addressed the head of the presidential council for human rights Valery Fadeev with a letter in which he spoke about the threats that his friends warn him about. Excerpts from circulation are published by RBC.

The reason for tough discussions was a conversation between director Alexander Sokurov and Vladimir Putin on December 9 at a meeting of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights. Among other frank topics, the director outlined the problem of the republics of the North Caucasus, the population of which, in his opinion, still does not fully understand the benefits of being a part of the Russian Federation. The President responded categorically, saying that it was unacceptable and dangerous to speak publicly with such a delicate topic.

“I see what indignation my behavior has caused in the national press and in the administrative-power environment. I am sure that you are in a lot of trouble in the presidential administration. I sincerely regret this, – writes Sokurov to Fadeev. – I was shown an angry reaction to my behavior from the presidential press secretary [Дмитрия Пескова]… He is right – I am an amateur and, apparently, such is not the place in such a respected professional environment as the Council. “

“My friends tell me about offensive statements from the Chechen sector,” Sokurov continued. “And I know that no one in the country will defend the honor and dignity of a member of the presidential council.”

“My friends warn about the impending danger of my life. The only guarantee of my life can be the president’s obstruction of such a radical denouement, ”the filmmaker said to Fadeev.

The head of the HRC himself refused to comment on the appeal, and Sokurov later said that his letter was not for public discussion.
