Merchants, businessmen and hoteliers carried out a symbolic reopening of the binational bridge in Mataje. They went there this Wednesday the 15th carrying flags of Ecuador, Colombia and the province of Esmeraldas.

The brotherhood meeting had the participation of the delegations of Tumaco (Nariño), Esmeraldas and San Lorenzo del Pailón, northern border.

They asked the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, and the Foreign Ministry of Ecuador to authorize the opening of this highway corridor on the Pacific coast, as well as the Rumichaca bridge.

The same exhortation was made to the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, since this international corridor Espriella – Río Mataje is the most important foreign trade opportunity in the Pacific area, said Raúl Araujo, director of productivity and business competitiveness of Nariño.

For now, this border crossing remains closed.

“Colombian tourists do not come to Esmeraldas to vacation in December due to the closure of this bridge since the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Alegria Toro, a hotelier in the border area.

The economic reactivation of the Border Integration zone of the two nations must be articulated to the needs of the business communities from commercial ideas that benefit legal and formal businesses, said Jairo Meza, of the Tumaco Chamber of Commerce.

The visiting delegations indicated that only the pedestrian crossing of people is observed between the 68 meters of extension that the binational bridge has, with the control and review of the military of both nations.

Currently, the buildings of the Binational Border Attention Center (Cebaf), the highway and the missing bridge with Tumaco are advanced.

On August 14, Presidents Duque and Lasso held the official inauguration of the aforementioned corridor.

Since this Wednesday 15, the governments of Ecuador and Colombia endorsed the opening of the Rumichaca bridge for tractors that move between Ipiales and Tulcán, as part of a pilot plan. This project has several phases. (I)
