Walking outside is the best pastime for dogs. In winter, it is not always possible to fully walk your pet, so the dog’s activity decreases and it can gain weight. The head of the Russian Cynological Federation, Vladimir Golubev, warned about this in an interview with journalists from AGN Moscow.
“Excess weight is bad for a dog. In winter, not only people suffer from weight gain. Pets often move less, spend more time at home and ask for food,” Golubev said.
High consumption of treats can lead not only to weight gain, but also to health problems for the dog. The head of the federation also recalled that dogs can become lazy. They get used to a sedentary lifestyle and begin to refuse long walks. The owner should control the dog’s diet and activity level, but it is better to consult a specialist, reports aif.ru.
“If your pet has become less active, you need to think about reducing the calorie content of their food. But such a decision should be made only after consultation with a veterinarian,” Golubev noted.
At the same time, for street dogs, a little extra weight will not hurt. The specialist also emphasized that it is better to insulate booths and enclosures before winter.
