Olympic esports games could be held in Japan

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has sent a request to Japan to host the first Olympic eSports Games. The competition may take place as early as 2026, reports Metarating. Cybersport”.

The IOC first announced the creation of this area in early September 2023. Then a commission on eSports was created. The organization’s president, Thomas Bach, said he sees potential in the discipline to attract new audiences.

The 2022 Asian Games have already hosted competitions in esports disciplines, including Dota 2 and League of Legends. The Chinese team took first place, and the Mongolia team took second place.

However, at the Olympic week in Singapore, which took place in June 2023, the list of disciplines looked different: Fortnite (sports shooting), WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros (baseball), Chess.com (chess), Zwift (road cycling), Just Dance (dancing), Gran Turismo 7 (racing), Virtual Regatta (sailing), Virtual Taekwondo (taekwondo), Tennis Clash (tennis).

The physical sports tournament “Games of the Future”, which will be held in Russia in 2024 in Kazan and which is positioned as an “alternative Olympics 2.0”, is not considered by IOC functionaries as a recognized international tournament.
