Two houses destroyed, another at risk and three streets affected by the sinking in Zaruma, in El Oro. There are 300 people evacuated

Cantonal COE requested the Presidency to declare a state of exception in the Zaruma canton to ensure resources to attend the emergency.

The sinkhole that was formed in the central part of the Zaruma canton caused the collapse of two houses and affected a third.

Colón, November 29 and Alberto Castro streets, in the downtown area, are affected by this collapse that was reported around 7:20 p.m. this Wednesday.

The emergency led to several families being evacuated for prevention. Out of fear, some decided to remove their belongings from their buildings.

President Guillermo Lasso spoke out about the sinking in Zaruma

The National Risk Management Service indicated that no injuries or deaths were reported.

Neighbors in the area captured with their cell phones the moment when one of the heritage houses collapsed.

Military and police officers moved to the area to cordon off the area and provide protection.

The cantonal Emergency Operations Committee was activated to address the situation and coordinated temporary accommodation for the affected families. An estimated 300 people were transferred to two sites.

Residents indicated that this sinkhole is the product of illegal mining that has affected the soil.
