An analysis developed over the years by the Center for Environmental and Chemical Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (Cesaq-PUCE) details the presence of heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and nickel, in food sold in the country. The serious thing is that these are poisonous.

The study found high concentrations of lead in cinnamon powder, BBQ sauce and two tomato sauces sold in supermarkets.

On December 21, 2023, the National Agency for Health Regulation, Control and Supervision (Arcsa) reported that it had carried out controls at facilities related to the use of cinnamon within their production chain. It was also found that the imported cinnamon powder does not meet the established limits.

Previously, on December 11, Arcsa recommended avoiding the purchase of WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis products, warning of the presence of lead.

“We found toxic metals in tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, bananas, milk, fish… and we will continue to consume them for years in Ecuador”

As for the other hanger products mentioned in the study, a statement from Arcsa is awaited. It is essential that this is done for the peace of citizens who buy food and responsibility towards them.

When it comes to health, all related organizations must be activated: Arcsa, Ministry of Health, production areas.

Doctor of Biological Sciences Hugo Navarrete, director of research at PUCE, who was part of the team that developed the analysis, confirms that many foods are contaminated from their origin, from the moment they are grown. The expert recommends controls in every sense. There are soils on which some crops should not be allowed and there are products that are contaminated with heavy metals in production.

There have already been children in the United States poisoned by the porridge that Arcsa asked not to consume. In Ecuador, it is urgently necessary to publicly announce which products are contaminated with heavy metals and to tighten the control of the health of the population. (OR)
