St. Petersburg breaks temperature records

St. Petersburg residents experienced the coldest night since the beginning of this winter. By six o’clock in the morning, the air temperature at the city weather station was minus 20.9 degrees, which is 2.6 degrees lower than it was yesterday, noted Mikhail Leus, leading specialist at the Phobos weather center.

At the same time, in the Leningrad region frosts exceeded the 30-degree mark. It was coldest in the city of Tikhvin, where the air temperature dropped to minus 31.3 degrees.

Leus warned that the cold snap had not yet reached its peak. “In the next two days, frost leaders in both Moscow and St. Petersburg will change more than once,” the forecaster said.

According to the chief weather forecaster of St. Petersburg, Alexander Kolesov, the next two days will be the frostiest in the Northern capital and in the region. The air temperature in St. Petersburg will drop to -25…-30 degrees. “In the history of the city, until January 8, 30 degree frosts had not yet been recorded in the very center,” Kolesov emphasized, noting that the temperature dropped only to -25 degrees in 2002 and 1950.

The forecaster added that frosts are expected to ease from January 5 to 6, but the air temperature will only rise to -15…-20 degrees.

It should be noted that in St. Petersburg, due to frost, an “orange” level of weather danger has been declared.
