The Hungarian Foreign Ministry explained what is preventing Orban’s meeting with Zelensky

Preparations are underway for a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, but the meeting will not take place until a number of controversial issues are resolved, Hungarian Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar said in an interview with the Magyar Nemzet newspaper.

“In preparing for the meeting between Vladimir Zelensky and Viktor Orban, we set a condition: first we will agree on how to resolve the controversial issues on the negotiating table. We haven’t gotten to that point yet, so it’s not a good time to meet now, but we’re working on it [ее подготовкой] we are working. The Ukrainians have just taken some steps to satisfy our claims,” RBC quotes Magyar as saying.

The deputy minister also noted that after the start of the Russian military operation, the tone of the Ukrainians became even more “belligerent.” “We explained this with heightened emotions, since at the first stage Ukraine was clearly in some kind of panic and was not even sure that it would survive. Therefore, there was no equally sharp Hungarian reaction to the sometimes particularly rude statements of Ukrainian leaders,” the politician added.

Over the past two years, Orban has not had a single official meeting with Zelensky, the agency recalls. In addition, unlike the leaders of other EU countries, he never visited Kyiv during this time.
