In Germany, during Christmas and New Year, about 21.8 billion light bulbs will be used on Christmas tree garlands, as well as in living rooms, on the facades of houses and in courtyards, Lichtblick calculated and emphasized that this is a record value, Interfax reports.
The company carries out similar calculations annually. In 2022, there were 1.9 billion fewer light bulbs.
“Last year the energy crisis played a significant role in many consumers voting for fewer Christmas lights. This year it seems to have had only a minor impact,” said LichtBlick communications manager Ata Mohajer.
This year, 80% of Germans said they use LEDs exclusively or predominantly, up from 78% a year earlier. However, despite the widespread use of more energy-efficient LED technology, electricity consumption will increase by 1.3% compared to last year. As a result, about 621.9 million kWh of electricity will be used for festive illumination in Germany this year. This corresponds to the annual consumption of an average city with about 195 thousand households. The cost of this electricity will be approximately 286.1 million euros.
