Laima Vaikule, who advocated the demolition of Soviet monuments, has changed her mind – now she is not against monuments

Singer Laima Vaikule first supported the demolition of Soviet monuments in the Baltic republics, including Latvia, but then retracted her words.

She explained that she made many loud statements under the influence of strong emotions, writes StarHit.

“I sometimes speak out of anger, I want to make some kind of challenge. Of course, I am not against any monuments,” Vaikule noted. She emphasized that Latvian citizens must decide for themselves which monuments will stand on the streets of their cities.

“Let there be all the monuments of peace, if these monuments do not cause discord within the country. Why does the monument to Pushkin and others bother me? It doesn’t bother me,” the singer noted. She also added that she was tired of criticism. “I’m starting to talk so casually because I’m already tired. Enough, leave me alone with these monuments,” the singer snapped.

Previously, she supported the demolition of monuments to Soviet soldiers on Latvian territory, noting that she does not understand people who want to bow their heads in front of a monument to a soldier. “This is just a monument, not a burial place. What is the monument for? I don’t understand. It has no artistic value,” Vaikule pointed out, and also called for a reconsideration of views on May 9, which, in her opinion, is treated too reverently in Russia.
