In a recent interview, in which I was asked about Social Security, which is in an evident crisis of large proportions, I was able to explain the enormous problems that this institution is going through.
With a lot of maturity, the recently inaugurated president of the Main Council (VS) of the mentioned institution said that there is no more money to take care of the families of the members.
Both the health care fund and the IVM fund are completely underfunded and we cannot wait any longer for a major reform.
With that in mind, the journalist asked me: Do you think the president of Nobo will make changes? I answered: Why the president?
Changes in social security require the Assembly, which must process changes to existing legislation. This requires the decision of the Board of Directors, which consists of the representative of the president, the representative of the employers and the representative of the workers. In addition, the understanding and participation of pensioners is necessary. It is, therefore, the effort of society, not the President of the Republic.
But in Ecuador, we continue with the idea that problems are solved because a citizen endowed with fantastic powers, called the president, uses a magic wand and everything is solved. The president knows how to find resources, he knows how to change the law, he knows how to stop thieves, he knows how to do absolutely everything.
This is one of the most difficult problems facing Ecuador; and for citizens to understand that the task of development is not on the Government, but on the entire society, where everyone must do what they must and everyone must give what they must.
In Ecuador, if more resources are needed, everyone wants the other to provide them, if sacrifice is needed, others make it, if effort is needed, others contribute.
This is a bigger obstacle than bad governance. The most brilliant general cannot win a battle if the soldiers do not come out with love and devotion to defend the just cause.
This Christmas, I not only wish those who kindly read this column a lot of happiness, peace and harmony, but I hope that the child who will be born will remind us that he came into the world for the greatest sacrifice, and not to ask others to do things for him , that the apostles gave their lives and not him, he did not come to ask the Roman procurator to solve problems, nor to ask the king of Judea to act, but to do things He, with a spirit of sacrifice never seen before and that never before seen. He will repeat are.
If this spirit of contribution to the community, of sacrifice for others, does not appear in Ecuador, if everyone continues to expect others to contribute and not themselves, there will be no successful management of the government.
I hope that the citizens will encourage the country to implement the reforms that we desperately need. Let’s stop believing in magic and start understanding our reality. I hope that Christmas will bring us that great gift. (OR)
