The risk of further penetration of the new omicron-strain of coronavirus into Russia during the New Year holidays is not excluded. Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova warned about this at a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with the government. Further actions of the authorities in the context of a pandemic were discussed.
According to Golikova, Interfax reports, the Russians will soon go on New Year’s holidays. “Of course, we are not insured against further penetration of this strain to us,” she stressed. Golikova also assured that Russian scientists continue to study the omicron strain. As new data emerges and the situation develops, she said, the authorities will “adjust the response.”
We will remind, at the present time in the Russian Federation has already identified 16 citizens who returned from South Africa, who are sick with the omicron strain. A total of 177 people who returned to Russia from this country and neighboring states were isolated.
A variant of the coronavirus B.1.1.529, dubbed omicron, was discovered at the end of November in South Africa and has already been identified in a number of other countries. Experts believe that it can pose a threat, as it spreads much faster than other strains that scientists have identified during the pandemic, and contains a large number of mutations. In the UK, one person infected with the omicron strain has died.
