Olga Chudinovskikh, head of the economics laboratory at Moscow State University, gave an interview to Pravda.Ru journalists, where she spoke about the statistics of crimes committed by labor migrants on the territory of the Russian Federation. According to the specialist, the data does not differ from last year.
She explains that frequent reports of crimes committed by migrants from other countries may be the result of the media focusing on such topics, and not the real facts of an increase in crime statistics for this category of residents of the Russian Federation. Olga Chudinovskikh refers to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, according to which in the first 10 months of this year there were fewer crimes committed by foreigners than in the previous year. Their share in the total number of crimes in the country remains below 4%. Last year this figure was 3.9%, and this year remains at the same level.
The expert also claims that over the past year, 40 thousand crimes were committed by foreign citizens, while this year this figure was about 30 thousand. This information is available on the official website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and has been published monthly since 2003.
Thus, the expert comes to the conclusion that the surge in information about migrant crimes in the media may be greatly exaggerated, and real data does not confirm an increase in the level of crime among this population group.
