A new article will appear in the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – 136.1 “Russophobia”. As Interfax reports, the government commission on legislative activities supported the corresponding draft law.
The article will provide for liability for “discriminatory actions committed outside the territory of the Russian Federation.” Punishment will be imposed on “foreign officials, officials of a public international organization or foreign citizens using their official position in relation to a citizen of the Russian Federation, a stateless person permanently residing in the Russian Federation or a compatriot who is not a citizen of the Russian Federation.”
Public calls for the commission of these discriminatory actions will also be punished.
It is also noted that in exceptional cases it will be allowed to conduct trials in criminal cases of crimes of medium gravity in the absence of the defendants. The introduction of such changes is explained by the need to ensure protection measures, including from the destruction or damage of military graves, monuments, steles, obelisks and other memorial structures or objects perpetuating the memory of those killed in defense of the Fatherland.
The author of the project is State Duma Vice Speaker Irina Yarovaya.
