You should not brush your teeth after eating certain foods. Dentist Alexey Antipenko warned about this, Sputnik radio reports.
According to him, sweet and sour foods are very harmful to tooth enamel, and you should not brush your teeth immediately after eating such food. The dentist explained that the bacteria that cause caries feed only on sweets. Microorganisms digest carbohydrates and secrete organic acid, which corrodes mineral tissue, the doctor noted, adding that teeth consist mainly of calcium and phosphorus.
Sour foods are slightly inferior to sweets in terms of their effect on enamel. The doctor noted that there are protective systems in the oral cavity – if a tooth loses calcium or phosphates, the remineralization process starts: substances released into saliva are returned back by protective systems. However, if a person adds acid, the balance is upset and begins to shift towards destruction. So, fruits, berries, juices and other foods containing acid should be consumed in moderation so as not to increase the sensitivity of the enamel.
However, under no circumstances should you brush your teeth for at least 20–30 minutes after eating something sour or sweet. The dentist emphasized that during this time the top layer of damaged enamel is restored and remineralized. And if you brush your teeth immediately after such a meal, “it will be like a brutal teeth whitening technique, an abrasive.” The dentist advises rinsing your mouth with water or simply drinking a glass of water to wash away the sugar or acidic film.
