Migratory control at the Rumichaca Bridge: Colombia offers an agile process for transit from Ecuador

This December 15, after 20 months of inactivity, the main viaduct between Ecuador and Colombia will be reopened.

This December 15, after 20 months of inactivity, the Rumichaca International Bridge will reopen, which connects Ecuador with Colombia. From the neighboring country they offer agile immigration control to avoid crowds.

Juan Francisco Espinosa, general director of Migration Colombia, said that the entity has arranged a turnstile system that will allow Colombian and Ecuadorian travelers to carry out their immigration control process in less than 30 seconds.

A special care scheme for cargo vehicles has also been designed, which will have the support of the Health Secretariats of Nariño and Ipiales.

Within this scheme, in accordance with what was agreed by the transport authorities of both countries, will be the requirement of the vaccination card for drivers and crew of the tractor-trailers, the only ones authorized to pass through the viaduct in a stage that includes four phases.

The complete vaccination schedule must have a minimum of fifteen days after the second dose has been applied.

In addition, the permanent use of face masks will be required for all travelers and the distance of at least one meter between each of them.

“The Ministers of Transportation and Public Works of both countries will arrive at Tulcán at 1:30 p.m., where they will hold a meeting at the ECU-911, there they will sign the binational reopening agreement to officially give way to the trucks at 2:30 p.m., on the Rumichaca viaduct ”, said the governor of Carchi, Yaco Martínez.

The general director of Migration Colombia clarified that in the case of the Migration Control Post of San Miguel, in Putumayo, it will work from 06:00 to 18:00, while in Rumichaca a care scheme has been arranged that will work 24 hours a day, with twice the number of officials working in filters and a special group of graphologists and documentologists, who will work on the validation of travel documents.

Espinosa affirmed that the agreements established between the two countries will be respected and, except for those who move through the border integration zones, all other travelers must carry out their migration control process both when entering and leaving the national territory.

The head of the Colombian immigration authority indicated that this is a huge step to combat irregularity and migrant smuggling networks that use clandestine trails or roads. (I)
