The theft of fuel through the coupling of valves and clandestine hoses has become a constant in the province of Sucumbíos.

So far in 2021, more than ten clandestine facilities have been discovered by the Ecuadorian army in different parts of the border province.

On this occasion, in the Shushufindi canton, a pool was dismantled that stored approximately 1,500 gallons of fuel stolen from a pipeline by smugglers who are dedicated to supplying hydrocarbons to coca processing laboratories in Colombia.

The discovery was made by a patrol of the Special Operations Battalion in Jungle Number 54 Captain Calles, in charge of providing protection and security in the strategic and hydrocarbon areas of the area.

“We proceeded to contact the competent authorities in order to proceed with the corresponding administrative and legal procedures,” the Army said in a statement.

Next to the clandestine swimming pool, made of plastics and wood, 50 meters of hose and a clandestine coupling were found attached to the pipeline.

In another operation carried out in Orellana, the Jungle Brigade Number 19 Napo, through the Jungle Battalion Number 57 Montecristi, with members of the Nashiño Detachment, during the execution of military operations in support of the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, located two persons of Peruvian nationality carrying out illegal hunting and fishing activities.

Both people were detained and placed at the disposal of the competent authorities in order to continue with the corresponding legal process. (I)
