The insecurity we are exposed to due to the intense increase in crime resembles a hybrid war, with a military strategy that could use irregular forces through terrorism, organized crime around drug trafficking, insurgency, human and arms trafficking, exploitation of natural resources, fake news, lawlessness and electoral intervention for the installation of like-minded politicians. Our enemy is secret and supported by multiple actors destabilizing geographically populated populations.
Revenge of geographyAmerican Robert Kaplan’s book summarizes: Geography marks the destiny of a nation. In Ecuador, insecurity favors: privileged geographical position on the equinox line, access to the Pacific Ocean and neighborhood with Colombia and Peru, with large areas of coca crops and cocaine production.
The weakness of state institutions, the corruption of certain authorities, laws such as universal citizenship that allow free mobility, impunity granted by some judicial operators, few employment opportunities, the opaque parallel financial system of the dollar and the infiltration of criminals into almost all state agencies.
In short, our geographic location allowed the integration of a bloody international route of drugs, weapons, people and money.
On December 7, our President of the Republic presided over the meeting of the UN Security Council on transnational crime and condemned that he, his ministers and family members receive death threats almost every day; He attributes them to transnational criminal organizations aiming to weaken our borders to favor their own routes and demanded a strong and timely response.
At the same time, in our country, the ambassador of the United States condemned the infiltration of organized crime into the spheres of government and democratic institutions, he said that there are judicial officials and even sports leaders contaminated with drug money. It must have solid elements, because it had a negative impact on us in the international context.
These statements highlight the serious situation we are in and the need for international integration to create policies, strategies and tactics to combat, neutralize or eliminate all or some of the hybrid actions of international organized crime, supported by the dark financial system that feeds them. National criminals are connected to the big cartels who kill, take away their freedom and put a stamp of distrust on Ecuadorians.
We put the dead in this hybrid war to control drug and people routes, from production and transit areas to receiving areas. The paths of money and weapons circulate in the opposite direction. Therefore, it makes sense what our president presented to the UN Security Council, to give a strong and timely response, and to apply the thesis of the revenge of geography, in favor of insecurity.
