The rise in egg prices before the New Year is caused by several factors. State Duma deputy Artem Kiryanov expressed the opinion that strict government regulation will not help solve this problem. He noted that several years ago the cost of eggs also increased sharply, and this happened long before the sanctions. At that time, the issue was discussed about the correctness of selling eggs not in dozens, but in smaller quantities per package.
Kiryanov emphasized that currently there are problems with laying hens and import substitution of feed, writes the online publication “Moscow Region Today. Economist Olga Tarasova added that the seasonal factor also influences the rise in egg prices before the New Year. She noted that many people will be spending the holidays at home, and eggs and egg-based dishes are the most affordable and easiest to prepare. Therefore, the demand for eggs increases during this period.
One of the reasons for rising egg prices is also a decrease in production. Over the past 10 years, about 60 egg factories have closed in Russia, and about 10 more have been repurposed. This resulted in a reduction in total production by approximately 10%. At the same time, the cost of hatching eggs, feed additives, tariffs for utility bills and delivery of finished products also increased.
Kiryanov noted that the problem may be more complex than it seems. Interaction between poultry farms and retail chains is not always successful. However, he believes that strict government regulation is not the solution. Instead, we need support for poultry farms from the state and the development of poultry farming based on proposals and analysis from the regions. This approach will ensure market stability and the possibility of government intervention if necessary.
