Today marks 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, and this time was marked by significant changes in this most important legal document of the country.
We are talking not only about the famous amendments of 2020, which caused extensive discussion in society, but also about other significant adjustments made to the Russian Constitution over the three decades of its existence, FederalPress writes.
The period of Vladimir Putin’s reign turned out to be significant for the Russian Constitution, which also saw significant amendments.
Amendments 2014
In 2014, although there were no fundamental changes to the Constitution, three important adjustments were made:
The Supreme Court received powers that previously belonged to the liquidated Supreme Arbitration Court.
The President was given the opportunity to appoint deputy Prosecutor Generals and prosecutors of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, as well as up to 10 percent of the members of the Federation Council (17 senators).
New subjects were enshrined in the Constitution – the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol.
Amendments to the Constitution 2020
The 2020 amendments became the largest update of the Russian Constitution in its history. The process began with a message from President Vladimir Putin to the Federal Assembly, where more than 20 amendments were proposed, and the working group made about 200 changes.
President Putin explained the need for these changes, emphasizing that they are aimed at the further development of Russia as a legal and social state, where the main values are the freedoms and rights of citizens, human dignity and well-being.
