Russians who are not allowed to travel abroad will begin to have their passports taken away at the border.

In Russia, a law on a unified list of grounds for invalidity of passports has come into force. The project was adopted back in the summer: the country’s president signed it on June 13 – according to the rules, the document came into force 180 days after its official publication.

According to the law, a foreign passport becomes invalid if it is lost, expires, or if personal data changes or death.

The main news is that foreign passports will begin to be confiscated from Russians who are not allowed to travel abroad. The security forces will be able to do this at the border. This will affect citizens with travel restrictions; they will be required to deposit their foreign passports within five working days after notification of the ban on leaving Russia.

Seized passports will be stored in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consular and diplomatic institutions. If the document is not submitted on time, it will be considered invalid.

The list of those who are prohibited from leaving includes military personnel, bankrupts, debtors, suspects and accused of a criminal offense, as well as citizens with access to state secrets, FSB employees and persons who knowingly provided false information about themselves in order to leave the Russian Federation. And those who were called up for compulsory military service, those in alternative civilian service and those who were mobilized are also subject to restrictions.
