The psychologist explained what Monday syndrome is and how to cope with it

Monday syndrome occurs after the weekend and manifests itself in the form of apathy, anxiety, or a feeling of despondency from the daily routine. Clinical psychologist Stanislav Sambursky spoke about this, writes Gazeta.ru.

The specialist linked Monday syndrome with jet lag – on the weekend a person tries to catch up on sleep to make up for the lack of sleep during the week. However, this causes a shift in the circadian rhythm, which regulates sleep, wakefulness, appetite and mood. Another reason for the syndrome lies in psychological factors, for example, reluctance to go to work, which may be due to dissatisfaction with one’s field of activity, conflicts with colleagues or toxic management.

Sambursky noted that you can get out of this emotional state if you follow a number of recommendations. First, you need to develop a routine – go to bed and get up at approximately the same time, so as not to disrupt the circadian rhythm. If you want to sleep longer on weekends, then it’s better to add no more than an hour so as not to disrupt your biological rhythm.

It is also important to prepare for Monday in advance – the day before you can make a list of things that need to be done the next day and prioritize them. It is also important to think about what you need to take with you to work and pack everything you need, while choosing clothes that lift your mood. You can also indulge in pleasant little things – a delicious breakfast, your favorite music. Finally, it is important to shift the focus from problems to positive aspects and achievements.
