AP demanded from the US authorities to explain the surveillance of journalists

The Assosiated Press (AP) news agency has asked the US Department of Homeland Security for an explanation regarding the spying on journalists. This was reported in the material of the agency.

According to AP, a special unit of the US Customs and Border Protection used secret government databases designed to track terrorists while investigating 20 American journalists, including AP reporter Martha Mendoza.

According to the agency, AP Executive Director Julie Pace sent a letter to the head of the IMB Alejandro Mallorcas demanding to explain why Mendoza’s name was in these databases as a “potential confidential informant” during the Trump administration. Pace accused the federal agency of “using its powers to verify the contacts of journalists.” She stressed that these actions were taken during the previous administration, but “this practice was described as common.”

The US Department of Internal Affairs has not yet commented on this.
