Russia “let the world down” by vetoing the draft UN Security Council resolution on climate, said US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield on her Twitter microblogging page.
A draft resolution put forward by Ireland and Niger identified climate change as a “threat to international security.” In her statement, Thomas-Greenfield stressed that Russia “did not allow the UN to take a practical and necessary step to combat climate change.” However, according to her, “the global movement in this direction cannot be stopped.”
The diplomat noted that “only the UN Security Council can guarantee the integration of the issue of climate change into the key work on the prevention and mitigation of conflicts, peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance.”
Russia vetoed the draft resolution the day before. Representatives of the Russian Federation to the UN explained their decision by “a one-sided approach to the consideration of conflicts and security threats – through a ‘climate prism'”.
