The British edition of The Sun reminded readers of the secret of a small pocket on jeans and noted that there is still no single version of its purpose.
A small square pocket near the waistband of jeans first appeared in 1890 on Levi’s Lot 501. Researchers of the history of fashion still put forward different versions of the purpose for which it was invented. According to most, the pocket was originally intended to hold a watch on a chain. However, opponents of this version point out that at that time jeans were worn by workers – miners and gold prospectors – who rarely had such a watch. In this regard, they are of the opinion that the pocket could have been intended for a lighter or nails.
Over time, the company did not abolish this pocket in order to preserve the original design of the iconic jeans model. However, during World War II, two corner rivets were removed to preserve the metal for military use. After the end of the war, the fittings were returned to their place.
Other brands often copy this detail, but sometimes place the “iconic” little pocket in different places on the jeans. Lovers of this clothing claim that rings, matches, coins and even keys can be stored in the pocket, but in general it is rather useless. However, the pocket does not disappear from many jeans as a tribute to the original Levi’s design.
