Chechen UFC fighter cleared of torture charges in Phuket

French UFC fighter of Chechen origin Khussein Askhabov told Match TV that all charges against him and his brother were dropped in the case of robbing an Italian citizen in Phuket (Thailand).

Askhabov, along with his brother Khasan, was arrested in early September on suspicion of involvement in the kidnapping of an Italian citizen, robbery and torture, writes RBC. In early September, three citizens of Kazakhstan broke into the villa of an Italian citizen, beat him for several hours, demanding access to passwords, cards and a crypto-wallet, and at the same time called someone for further instructions. The Askhabovs were suspected of organizing the crime, but the other day they were released.

“The police said that in three months they had nothing that would confirm my participation in this case. The cameras looked at where we were at that moment: I was in a restaurant, then I went home to sleep, because I was preparing for a fight at that moment. My brother was in his villa,” Askhabov said.

Due to the arrest, the UFC canceled Askhabov’s fight against American Daniel Pineda scheduled for October 7. “The case is closed, on Thursday I must pick up a document that confirms that I am not involved in anything, I will send it to the UFC, and they promise to give me a fight before Ramadan,” the athlete concluded.

Askhabov was born in Grozny, and in 2012 he moved to France. Before his UFC debut, he had 23 wins in 23 fights. The fighter went through a training camp in Phuket.
