Felinologists have finally told us how to stop a cat from walking around the dining table

The habit of domestic cats climbing onto the dining table is becoming a real problem for many pet owners. Felinologist Tamara Ivanova told how to force an animal to change its behavior.

According to the expert, cats can climb onto the table for several reasons: in an attempt to beg for a treat, out of curiosity, and also in order to comfortably observe what is happening from a height.

“It is not recommended to feed a cat from the table: in this way we form a bad habit, and more often than not, there is nothing healthy for the cat in the prepared food that we eat. If this behavior is not reinforced, the cat will soon stop attacking the table. To make the process go faster, you can take a little cat treat and put it in a bowl, which, naturally, should be in the place where you usually feed your pet,” notes Ivanova.

A curious cat has no interest in an empty table, so if you remove everything from it, you will leave the mustachioed explorer with nothing.

If the table is an observation point for your cat, arrange an alternative nearby – a complex, a column with a bed, place the bedding on a windowsill or shelf.

“Splashing water on a cat or frightening it with sharp sounds is not recommended. You may achieve the desired effect, but such methods of control can cause stress in the animal and also worsen your relationship. Also, you should not brush the cat off the table – the cat will not have time to prepare for the jump and regroup, and in this case the height of the table is sufficient to cause injury. One of the working methods is to use foil or tape laid out on the table – cats do not like rustling and sticky surfaces, as well as fragrances like citrus fruits – their smell is unpleasant for most cats,” explains Tamara Ivanova.
