In Russia, not all online stores protect payments using 3D Secure technology, which provides for confirmation of the transaction using a code from an SMS sent to the phone number associated with the buyer’s card.

Fraudsters can take advantage of this vulnerability and pay for goods with someone else’s card, RBC reports.

In order to reduce the risk of large losses when fraudsters gain access to card data, it is better to keep fixed assets in a separate bank account, not tied to the card. Currently, most banks allow you to open a savings account in a mobile application or in the Internet bank and quickly transfer money from card to account and vice versa. From such an account, you can periodically replenish the card for small amounts for daily expenses.

In addition, the agency points out, you can get a separate card for online purchases.

However, if cybercriminals did steal money by making payments in online stores without 3D Secure, then the client will be able to return the funds. “Within the framework of the rules established by payment systems, for unauthorized transactions carried out without using 3D Secure, responsibility rests with the participant in the settlement chain who does not use this service,” a representative of Promsvyazbank explained to RBC.

At the same time, if the merchant does not support 3D Secure, then the issuing bank has the right to launch the procedure for the return of disputed funds – chargeback, adds Mikhail Ivanov, director of the information security department of Rosbank.

To do this, the user must submit an application to his bank to challenge the fraudulent transaction, stating that he does not recognize the purchase and that he did not make it, the main thing is to do this no later than 120 days from the date of the transaction. In some cases, the term may be even longer.
