WHO: Hundreds of millions of people worldwide could face extreme poverty due to pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank (WB), in their complementary reports, do not rule out that more than half a billion people in the world may be plunged into extreme poverty due to the coronavirus infection COVID-19, which has stalled human progress towards universal access to healthcare services.

As, in particular, the WHO and the WB pointed out, the COVID-19 pandemic caused “the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, so it became more difficult for people to pay for treatment.” And this situation “pushes more than half a billion people into extreme poverty, because they have to pay for these services out of their own pockets,” reports TASS.

Recall that at the beginning of this year, experts from the World Economic Forum (WEF) warned that the consequences of a pandemic could threaten the development of the world economy in the next 3-5 years. In addition, they do not rule out that as a result of the pandemic, social inequality may increase.

And on October 16, Dutch top manager Jan Dunning, who works in Russia, said that waste in relation to food would soon come back to haunt residents of different countries. In his opinion, already in the 2030s, humanity will face not just a food crisis, but real hunger.
