The European Union will deploy Frontex border guard forces to the Finnish border with Russia

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex plans to send 50 border guard officers and other staff, as well as equipment such as patrol vehicles, to strengthen Finland’s border controls. At the moment, 10 agency employees are working at the Finnish borders, Frontex said in a statement.

The first group is expected to arrive on November 29. These will include border control officers, migrant registration support services, document experts and translators, RBC reports.

“Frontex Finland’s support goes beyond logistics; “This is a demonstration of the European Union’s united position in the fight against hybrid challenges affecting one of its members,” Frontex executive director Hans Leytens is quoted in the publication as saying.

“Frontex’s involvement in this situation is not only focused on border security measures. The Agency is acutely aware of the humanitarian aspect of this scenario, especially given the harsh weather conditions and the unpreparedness of people arriving at the Finnish border,” the statement emphasizes.

The agency took similar measures in the summer of 2021, during the migration crisis on the border of Belarus and Poland.
