The UN adopted a resolution on the Olympic truce for the period of the 2024 Games

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the Olympic Truce for the period of the 2024 Games in Paris. More than half of the Assembly members voted for the adoption of the document, Russia and Syria abstained, RBC reports.

“We put the draft resolution to a vote and abstain on it, we call on states to do the same,” RIA Novosti quotes Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Maria Zabolotskaya. According to her, the proposed version of the document “does not reflect the principles of equality and depoliticization of sport.”

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, spoke at the General Assembly meeting: “In this fragile world, this resolution on the Olympic Truce is more relevant than ever. In these difficult times, this resolution is our opportunity to send a clear message to the world: yes, we can unite, even in times of war and crisis. Yes, we can join hands and work together for a better future,” Bach said.

The head of the IOC believes that the Olympic Games can help achieve this goal. “Because the Olympic Games are the only event that unites the whole world in peaceful competition. Athletes send a powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete with each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. This is our contribution to the world,” Bach added.

In addition, he noted that All athletes who qualify and comply with the Olympic Charter must participate in the Olympic Games.

The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11 next year. The decision on the participation of Russian athletes in the Games has not yet been made.
