The head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, acknowledged that Ukraine and Georgia have a chance of joining NATO, as soon as these two countries are able to meet the internal requirements of this organization. He recalled that back in 2008, the North Atlantic Alliance confirmed its openness to the membership of both countries.
“NATO has made it clear since its inception that its doors will be open to any European country that aspires to membership and meets the necessary criteria,” the US Secretary of State added in an interview with NBC on Sunday.
He also confirmed that the United States is preparing a plan of action to contain the Russian Federation in the event of its alleged invasion of Ukraine, and at the same time strives for stable and predictable relations with Russia.
These promises are pleasant for the official Kiev, but do not contain a clear answer about the desired date. Back in 2008, NATO announced the possibility of accepting Ukraine and Georgia into its membership in the future, but did not provide them with action plans, which is the first stage of the legal procedure for joining NATO.
