The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which the US is trying to blockade, is in the process of certification, but still does not meet EU requirements. German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said this in an interview to the ZDF TV channel, recalling that European energy law should be applied to energy projects that are carried out in the European Union.
The co-chair of the Green Party, and now the Minister of Foreign Affairs, made similar statements before her new appointment. At the same time, during her time in the ranks of the opposition, Annalena Berbock was known for her critical attitude both in Russian politics in general and towards Nord Stream 2 in particular.
The agreement drawn up by the new coalition government, which the minister refers to, does not mention Nord Stream 2 separately; it only emphasizes the priority of European standards in relation to projects of this content.
Earlier it was reported that in the case of the application of sanctions by the United States, Nord Stream 2, which is especially important for German business, can be launched even before the certification process is completed. Today, the need for such actions does not seem obvious – on the one hand, the United States refused to include sanctions against Nord Stream 2 in the consolidated defense budget, on the other hand, they threaten to give them a go in the event of a hypothetical Russian attack on Ukraine.
Nevertheless, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki hopes that the start of the gas pipeline can be stopped with the help of allies from Germany. He announced this at a joint press conference with his new German counterpart Olaf Scholz.
According to Morawiecki, the numerous risks associated with the commissioning of Nord Stream 2 have not yet been fully identified, but it is obvious that it poses a threat to Poland, Ukraine and a number of other Eastern European countries, which will be subject to “blackmail by Russia “.
