The new German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, spoke about the time frame during which Germany will reduce its dependence on natural gas. According to him, this will happen on the horizon of the next 25 years.
By 2045, Germany should become a climate neutral country, which will reduce the role of fossil fuels in the energy sector in Germany. Scholz’s predecessor Angela Merkel called the same terms, saying that 25 years later “gas from the Russian Federation to Europe will be exported in smaller volumes or will cease to be exported at all.”
At the same time, the new leadership of the FRG does not speak of abandoning the built but not certified Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, stressing that its fate will depend on relations between Russia and Ukraine. Germany also supports Ukraine in the need to extend the agreement between Moscow and Kiev providing for the transit of Russian gas (the agreement expires in 2024) and is ready to help Kiev in the issue of “green” energy transformation.
