Colombian singer Shakira has pleaded guilty in a tax evasion case in Spain. The court ordered her to pay a fine of 7.3 million euros and also sentenced her to three years in prison, but the prison term was replaced by the payment of another 432 thousand euros, RBC reports, citing the publication of El Mundo.
The investigation lasted several years. Spanish authorities accused the artist of tax evasion in six episodes from 2012 to 2014. The investigation believes that she then lived in Barcelona for 183 or more days, which makes her a tax resident of Spain, but did not pay taxes. The singer herself claimed that she lived in the Bahamas.
Since 2010, Shakira has been in a relationship with Spanish footballer, former Barcelona player Gerard Pique. The couple has two children and separated in June last year.
The accusation was based on reports of Shakira visiting hair and beauty salons in Barcelona, a clinic during her pregnancy, and renting a recording studio near the city. El Mundo notes that in connection with reaching an agreement, these and other details of the singer’s life will not be disclosed in court. The court recognized as a mitigating circumstance the singer’s payment of 14.5 million euros to the treasury – taxes with interest.
