Many Russians start their morning with a cup of coffee. However, such a habit is harmful to health, says Belarusian nutritionist Irina Yablonskaya, writes the portal Newgrodno.by.
The specialist notes that if you drink coffee in the morning, you can not only gain weight, but even begin to suffer from obesity. The doctor explained that coffee on an empty stomach provokes the release of cortisol into the blood and irritates the gastric mucosa. At the same time, coffee on an empty stomach is also food, and any food provokes the release of insulin into the blood, the doctor emphasized.
She called for reducing the number of cups of coffee per day to two, then it will not harm the body.
It is advisable not to drink coffee after lunch, then you will be able to get rid of insomnia, the doctor noted. She also advised not to smoke while drinking coffee.
Her colleague, nutritionist Marta Marudova, on the contrary, believes that coffee has a positive effect on the brain – it prevents Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and also reduces the risk of developing cancer, improves attention, concentration, memory, and mood. However, she agrees that when consumed in excess, coffee can cause addiction similar to alcohol. According to her, due to the effect on calcium metabolism, it is not recommended in the diet of children and adolescents and in old age. Coffee also increases blood pressure, provokes migraines, insomnia and tachycardia, and also dehydrates.
The doctor noted that it is better not to drink coffee during meals, because this drink binds a large amount of useful substances – iron, calcium and magnesium, interfering with their absorption from food. And additives to coffee increase its calorie content, which means the risk of insulin resistance increases, and as a result, the development of diabetes in the future.
As an alternative, nutritionists advise drinking black or oolong tea, chicory and cocoa.
