RBC: Strelkov is running for president

Former Minister of Defense of the DPR Igor Strelkov (Girkin), who is currently in a pre-trial detention center, decided to run as a presidential candidate – he was arrested in July on charges of extremism. As RBC writes with reference to Strelkov’s ally Oleg Nelzin, the ex-minister decided to form a nomination headquarters.

Strelkov wrote a letter from the pre-trial detention center in which he called on his supporters to form a headquarters for his nomination for the presidential elections in the spring of 2024 as a self-nominated candidate. Strelkov said that the nomination is “a chance to unite in the face of external and internal threats.”

“I make a proposal to begin work on nominating me as a presidential candidate in accordance with the current legislation of Russia,” Strelkov said in a statement.

Let us remind you that the presidential elections in the Russian Federation are scheduled to take place on March 17, 2024. The status of a defendant in a criminal case does not interfere with his presidential nomination, but if Strelkov is sentenced before the elections, he will not be able to take part in the election campaign.

Let us add that Strelkov was arrested in the summer of this year for calls for extremism. The media reported that a complaint was written against him by a former employee of the Wagner PMC, and the investigation is being conducted by the FSB. Strelkov himself noted that the reason for the case was two posts in his Telegram channel about events in Crimea and problems with the military’s allowance.
