Israel will only agree to short ceasefires in the Gaza Strip in order to free as many hostages as possible. Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi stated this at a press conference, Interfax reports with reference to The Times of Israel.

According to him, Israel will agree to a ceasefire only in exchange for the release of a large number of hostages, but not for “speculation about their release by the Hamas group for PR purposes.”

“Only then will we agree to a ceasefire, and it will be very limited and short, because then we will continue to move forward to achieve the goals of the war,” the adviser said.

He also said that Israel’s war cabinet had approved the US request to allow two trucks of fuel per day into the Gaza Strip. He explained that this is being done to maintain the sewage system in the enclave: this will prevent an outbreak of infectious diseases that threaten both the population of the sector and the Israeli military personnel operating there.

At the same time, as the publication notes, he avoided answering the question about Israel’s strategy towards Gaza after the end of the conflict. Instead, he reiterated Israel’s short-term goals of defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages.
