Emergency in Guano to attend flood damage, which affected neighborhoods, homes, businesses and cars

Rains in the moors would have caused the current that passed through the streets of the canton of Chimborazo. They were moments of anguish for the population.

Cries of despair in the town of Guano, Chimborazo province, were replicated when seeing that the stream of muddy water, stones and some logs that descended through the central streets took vehicles, dragged palisades and affected houses and places where they were also found. tourists.

The residents of this canton experienced moments of anguish on Saturday afternoon, affected by the consequences of the heavy rains in the Igualata moors.

“Get out, get out, it doesn’t matter (what stays). Catch the guaguas (girls). Come on, come on ”, one of the owners of one of the traditional picanterías that are located in the center of Guano is heard saying, while in the background it is heard that the force of the current begins to break the glass of the windows without that nobody could do anything.

Meanwhile, another drama is being experienced in the streets, because in the face of the desperation of the drivers, the current little by little reaches some vehicles, leaving them immobilized and at the mercy of the flood.

Héctor Cruz, resident of Guano, visibly shocked by what happened, stated that whenever it rains in the upper parts of the canton, that water runs down the San Sebastián ravine, overflowing everything towards the central streets of the city, also affecting the neighborhoods La Matriz, San Pedro, La Dolorosa, La Inmaculada, among others.

At the time of lamenting the situation experienced on Saturday the 11th, he called on the authorities to adopt the measures to prevent a similar event in the future.

Machinery from different institutions was present in the place, on Saturday, in order to begin cleaning the streets, as well as the removal of vehicles trapped by the material that was dragged by the current.

The mayor of Guano, Raúl Cabrera, confessed that the flood affected the entire canton. Only the Santa Teresita neighborhood had no effects from the natural phenomenon, he said.

He explained that actions were coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) and with the Provincial Government of Chimborazo in order to help with the cleaning machinery.

He also said that the cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE) was activated and that in the face of the difficult situation caused by the torrential rains, Guano was declared an emergency. He hopes that the provincial COE will do the same, in order to have more support with machinery from other cantons, noting that an evaluation was being made to know the houses that have collapsed and thus be able to provide help even with government entities.

He commented that what was experienced this Saturday is not only a product of the collapse of the San Sebastián stream, where maintenance has been provided, he said. For him, this strong storm has caused rainwater to fall from the Igualata through different sectors. (I)
