Legislate and supervise with capability, excellence and transparency to contribute to the comprehensive development of the country. This is the mission of the National Assembly described in detail in Article 1 of the Functional Organic Regulations of the Legislature. Today’s Ecuador requires unprecedented commitment from the parliamentarians who will be installed this Friday, November 17. Will it live up to the country where the crucifixion was applied for the first time in history, will be seen from the coming weekend.

Even without settling down, there is talk of pacts, agreements and distributions. The use of terminology in early meetings gives a negative charge. Therefore, it is advisable to be filled with transparency regarding the internal elections in the legislature, as well as the appointment of the chairpersons and members of its committees.

Should there be an agreement? Definitely yes. Agreement in favor of democracy, management and comprehensive development of the state, as stated in the Functional Organic Regulations of the National Assembly.

Legislative committees must be integrated by giving priority to the abilities of the representatives, not because of political calculations and party interests.. There is a difference. The conditions and alleged attempts at impunity are what cause rejection.

Citizens are tired of confrontations, of politics without respect for ethics and values, according to what was shown in the elections. Flat voting gave an advantage to some candidates because they were not elected by name but by political groups. Today, they have the opportunity to justify themselves, restore some prestige to the legislative function and show that they are capable of performing their functions honestly, responsibly, transparently and with service.

Time will tell if the executive and legislative agreements will be firm and honor the oath of service to the country. Then the citizens will be the best judge of the political actors in whom they trusted. (OR)
